Safety & security film
Clear, thick film that holds shattered glass together, slowing break-ins and reducing flying glass. Installed on homes, storefronts and offices.
Quick answer
Security window film is a thick, clear, tear-resistant film bonded to the inside of glass. When the glass breaks, the film helps hold the pieces together and in the frame, slowing a smash-and-grab break-in and reducing flying glass from impacts and storm debris. Texas Tinted installs 3M™ Safety & Security and HITEK Security Clear film on Houston homes and businesses.
Most break-ins through glass depend on speed. Security film doesn’t make glass unbreakable, but it turns a few seconds into a lot of noisy work, which is often enough for an intruder to give up.
It also helps during severe weather. Houston’s hurricane season runs June through November, and broken glass is one of the main hazards when debris hits a window. Film helps keep shards together. It is not a replacement for impact-rated windows or storm shutters.

Large ground-floor glass facing the backyard, out of view from the street.
Smash-and-grab protection for retail, plus anti-graffiti film that takes the scratches instead of the glass.
Entry vestibules and interior glass, where holding glass in place buys time.
Clear protection that doesn’t change the look of the building.
Helps hold glass together when debris strikes. Pair it with shutters or rated windows.
Security films are thicker than solar films and measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). Thicker film resists tearing longer. For higher performance, film can be anchored to the window frame with an attachment system so the whole pane stays in the opening.
We recommend thickness and attachment based on the glass, the frame and what you are protecting against.
Some security films combine safety and sun control in one layer, so a west-facing patio door gets heat rejection, UV protection and shatter resistance from a single install.
Three things determine how much a security film installation can take: the film’s thickness, whether it is anchored to the frame, and the glass itself. Residential and light-commercial films are typically 4 to 8 mil thick (a mil is one-thousandth of an inch). Thicker films and multi-ply constructions are used where the risk is higher, such as storefronts and schools.
Anchoring, or an attachment system, bonds the edge of the film to the window frame with a structural silicone or mechanical profile. Without it, a strong impact can push the whole filmed pane out of the frame in one piece. With it, the glass stays in the opening longer. We recommend anchoring on doors, sidelights and any glass that is a likely entry point.
Glass type matters too. Tempered glass breaks into small cubes and benefits greatly from film; annealed glass breaks into shards, which film holds together. Laminated glass already has an interlayer, so film adds UV and solar benefits more than break resistance.
Hurricane season runs June through November. Security film is not a code-approved substitute for impact-rated glass or shutters, and we will not tell you otherwise. What it does is reduce the chance that wind-borne debris turns a broken window into a room full of glass and rain. For homeowners who cannot install shutters on every opening, it is a sensible added layer.
Many customers choose a security film that also rejects heat, so a west-facing patio door gets break resistance, 99% UV blocking and real heat reduction from a single layer. Ask about 3M™ Safety & Security sun control versions and HITEK Security Clear paired with a ceramic solar film.
No. Security film helps hold broken glass together and slows forced entry. It is not ballistic protection.
It helps keep shattered glass from flying and can keep broken glass in the frame, but it does not make a window hurricane-rated. Follow local storm guidance and use shutters or impact windows where required.
Clear security film is close to invisible once installed. Tinted versions add solar control.
A clear sacrificial layer on glass or mirrors. If vandals scratch or etch it, the film is replaced instead of the glass.
