Quick answer

A full windshield heat film is a nearly clear ceramic or multilayer film installed across the entire windshield. It does not darken your view; it rejects infrared heat and blocks 99%+ of UV coming through the largest piece of glass in the car. Texas Tinted installs 3M™ Crystalline (90% and 70%) and HITEK Ceramic Ultra 70% on full windshields in Houston.

The biggest glass. The most heat.

Your windshield is the largest window on the car, it is raked back toward the sky, and it sits right in front of you. On a Houston afternoon it pours heat onto the dashboard, the steering wheel and your hands and arms. Side tint helps, but if the windshield is bare, most of the heat still gets in.

A clear heat-rejecting film changes that without changing what you see. Multilayer optical film like 3M™ Crystalline is engineered to reject infrared energy while letting visible light through, so the glass looks close to factory and the cabin stays noticeably cooler.

Films we use on windshields

Only the lightest, clearest films we carry go on a windshield. Darker film has no place in front of the driver.

FilmShadeTechnologyManufacturer spec
3M™ Crystalline 9090% VLTMultilayer optical film, 200+ layers, non-metal3M’s clearest automotive film; Crystalline series rated up to 97% IR rejection

HITEK Ceramic Ultra 7070% VLTNano-ceramic, non-metal96% IR (1025 nm) · up to 71% TSER across the line

VLT is the film’s rating on its own. On the car, the film combines with the windshield’s own tint, so the final reading is lower. Ask us to meter your windshield before and after.

What changes when the windshield is filmed

  • Less heat on your hands, arms and face on the drive home
  • A cooler dashboard and steering wheel after the car has been parked
  • Less UV on your skin and on dash materials that crack and fade
  • Less glare on bright days without a dark tint in your view
  • The A/C catches up faster, especially on dark interiors

Install details we handle

  • Film is trimmed around the rearview mirror, camera and rain-sensor housings so driver-assist systems see clearly
  • Large single piece heat-formed to the windshield’s curve, no seams
  • Dot-matrix (frit) borders prepped so the edges sit flat
  • Paired with a sun strip at the top if you want extra glare control there

What Texas law says about windshield film

We want you to choose with all the facts. Texas Transportation Code §547.613 exempts windshield film only when it stays above the AS-1 line or within the top 5 inches of the windshield, is 25% VLT or lighter, no more than 25% reflective, and not red, blue or amber. A full-windshield film falls outside that exemption even when it is nearly clear.

The same statute makes it a defense when the driver or a passenger must be shielded from the sun for a medical reason. Many drivers with sun-sensitive conditions talk to their doctor and keep documentation in the vehicle.

Our recommendation

If you add windshield film, choose the clearest option: 3M Crystalline 90 keeps the glass looking closest to factory and preserves night visibility. We will meter your glass, explain the trade-offs, and let you decide. See the full Texas tint law guide.

Frequently asked questions

Will clear windshield film make it harder to see at night?

The films we use are rated 70–90% VLT on their own and are chosen for clarity. 90% film is the closest to factory glass. Every windshield also has its own tint, so we meter the glass and recommend the lightest film that meets your heat goal.

Does windshield film block heat even though it is clear?

Yes. Multilayer optical and nano-ceramic films target infrared energy, which is the heat you feel, rather than visible light. That is how a nearly clear film can cut heat.

Is full windshield tint legal in Texas?

Texas exempts windshield film only above the AS-1 line or in the top 5 inches. A full-windshield film is outside that exemption even when clear. The statute provides a defense when a driver or passenger needs sun protection for a medical reason. This is a summary, not legal advice.

Will windshield film interfere with lane-keep cameras or toll tags?

The films we use are non-metal, and we cut the film around the camera and sensor housings so driver-assist systems keep a clear view. Toll tags and phone signals pass through normally.

Can I add a sun strip and a full windshield film?

Yes. Some drivers pair a full clear heat film with a darker legal strip at the top of the windshield for extra glare control.

Does the windshield film come with a warranty?

Yes. Windshield film is covered by our warranty against bubbling, peeling and discoloration. Glass breakage from rocks is not covered; if the windshield is replaced, the film goes with it.
