Ceramic vs. Carbon Window Tint

Which film blocks more heat, which costs less, and which one makes sense in Houston under Texas tint law.

Short answer

Ceramic tint is better at blocking heat. Carbon tint costs less. Both are non-metal, both block 99%+ of UV, and neither fades to purple like cheap dyed film. In Houston, where cars sit in strong sun for much of the year, ceramic is usually worth the upgrade, especially on the front doors, where Texas law caps how dark you can go.

What each film is made of

Carbon film uses carbon particles in the film layers. Carbon absorbs and blocks part of the infrared spectrum, gives a deep matte black look, and holds its color. It’s a real step up from dyed film, which uses dye to darken the glass and can fade toward purple over time.

Ceramic film uses nano-sized ceramic particles that target infrared light, the part of sunlight you feel as heat, while letting visible light through. That’s why a light ceramic film can feel cooler than a dark carbon film. Some premium films go further: 3M™ Crystalline uses a multilayer optical film with more than 200 layers.

When carbon makes sense

  • You mainly want privacy and a darker look.
  • The car is usually garaged or parked in shade.
  • You’re tinting an older vehicle or working to a tight budget.
  • You want a big upgrade over dyed film without paying for ceramic.

When ceramic is worth it

  • The car sits in open lots or long commutes in direct sun.
  • You want lighter, legal front doors but still want real heat control.
  • You have a glass roof or sunroof.
  • You have a dark interior, leather seats, kids or pets in back.

The Houston verdict

Texas lets you go as dark as you like on the rear doors and back glass, but front doors must stay at 25% or lighter (film and glass combined). That legal limit is the strongest argument for ceramic: you can’t get comfort from darkness on the windows next to you, so you need it from the film’s technology. A common Houston setup is ceramic at 30–35% on the front doors and 15–20% in back.

Why Texas Tinted installs ceramic only. Because of that front-door limit, every car we tint gets ceramic film. Our entry line, HITEK Ceramic IR, starts at $249, so the price step up from carbon is small and the comfort difference is large. Compare our lines in the instant quote. What about dyed film?

Dyed film is the cheapest option and the one behind most $99 tint specials. It darkens glass and blocks UV, but it absorbs heat instead of rejecting it, and the dye breaks down in UV, which is why old tint turns purple and bubbles. We do not install it. Removing failed dyed film costs nearly as much as a proper tint job, so the savings rarely last.

Reading the numbers

Two films can both say “ceramic” and perform very differently. Look for the TSER figure (total solar energy rejected) rather than a single IR number, because manufacturers measure IR over different wavelength ranges. HITEK publishes up to 71% TSER for Ceramic Ultra; 3M publishes up to 60% TSER for Crystalline. Both are measured on 73% VLT automotive glass, so they are comparable.

Frequently asked questions

Is ceramic tint darker than carbon?

Not necessarily. Both come in a range of shades. Darkness (VLT) and heat rejection are separate specs.

Does carbon tint fade?

Quality carbon film is color-stable and doesn’t turn purple the way cheap dyed film can.

Can I mix ceramic on the fronts and carbon in back?

Yes. Some customers put ceramic where they sit and carbon on the rear to manage cost.
