Quick answer
Texas Tinted tints the Tesla Model 3 (2017–2023 and the 2024+ Model 3 Highland) with non-metal ceramic film from 3M™ and HITEK. The Model 3’s rear glass is one of the largest single pieces of glass on any sedan, running from above the back seats down to the trunk. We tint it in one piece, heat-shrinking a single sheet of film to its compound curve, for the best heat rejection and a seamless factory look. If you want to spend less, we can tint just the clear bottom half instead. Front doors go to a legal Texas shade (30–35% film), rear doors and rear glass as dark as you like.
Model 3 tint is all about the rear glass
Most of a Model 3 is easy to tint: four frameless door windows and two small quarter windows. The rear glass is the hard part. It is one huge, deeply curved pane, and the upper section above the rear passengers already has a dark factory tint while the lower section above the trunk is close to clear. That clear section is where Houston sun pours onto the back seat, and the whole pane is what heats the cabin from behind.
Getting film to lie flat on glass that size takes a skilled installer and a lot of heat-shrinking. Plenty of shops in Houston don’t attempt it. They split the film into two pieces with a seam across the glass, or they only tint the clear bottom half. We install the full rear glass in one piece.

Model 3 rear glass: one piece vs bottom half
Two real Model 3s, photographed from the back seat: one with the full rear glass tinted in one piece, and one with only the clear lower section tinted and the factory-tinted upper section left as it came.

One-piece rear glassBest heat rejection · seamless
Bottom half onlyBudget option
| One-piece full rear glass | Two-piece (seam) | Bottom half only | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heat rejection | Best: ceramic film over the entire pane, including the roof section above the back seats | Full coverage, but with a seam across the glass | Only the clear lower section; the upper section keeps its factory tint alone |
| Look | Seamless, one even shade from top to bottom, like factory glass | Visible line across the rear view | Two different shades on one pane, with a film edge across the middle |
| Rear-seat comfort | Coolest: film over passengers’ heads too | Similar to one piece | Less overhead heat blocked |
| Skill needed | High: one large sheet heat-shrunk to a compound curve | Lower | Lower |
| Price | Premium | – | Lower: less film and labor |

Rear glass tint can be any darkness in Texas when the car has outside mirrors on both sides, which every Model 3 does.
Why one piece is the way to go
The Model 3’s factory-tinted upper section darkens the view but still lets a lot of infrared heat through, the part of sunlight you feel on your skin. Covering the whole pane with ceramic film adds heat rejection right over the rear passengers’ heads, not just above the trunk. And because it is one sheet, there is no seam in your rear-view mirror and no film edge across the middle of the glass. It looks like the car came that way.
When the bottom half makes sense
If budget comes first, tinting only the clear lower section still darkens the part of the rear glass you see through, adds UV protection and privacy, and cuts some heat. It costs less because it uses less film and takes less time. You can always upgrade to the full one-piece rear later; we remove the half piece and install a full sheet.
How the one-piece install works
Shrinking film for the Model 3 rear glass happens on the outside of the glass. The installer lays a single oversized sheet on the exterior, then uses a heat gun to shrink out the “fingers” where the flat film meets the curve, until it matches the glass exactly. The formed piece is trimmed, cleaned and moved inside, where it is squeegeed onto the interior surface with no seams.
- Step 1
Clean and pattern
Both sides of the glass are cleaned and the film is cut for your exact model year, Model 3 or Highland.
- Step 2
Heat-shrink to the curve
One sheet is shrunk on the outside of the glass until it lies flat across the whole compound curve.
- Step 3
Trim and transfer
The formed film is trimmed to the glass edge and dot matrix, then moved to the inside.
- Step 4
Install and finish
Squeegeed onto the interior glass, edges sealed, and the defroster lines protected.

Legal Model 3 tint in Texas
| Glass | Texas rule | What Model 3 owners pick |
|---|---|---|
| Front doors | 25% or lighter, film and glass measured together | 30% or 35% film |
| Rear doors | Any darkness | 15–20%, or 5% for limo |
| Rear glass | Any darkness with outside mirrors on both sides | Match the rear doors, in one piece |
| Windshield | Only above the AS-1 line or top 5 inches | Visor strip, or clear heat film |
Texas Transportation Code §547.613. More detail in Texas tint laws.
The Model 3 front door glass is close to clear from the factory, so a 30% or 35% film meters safely above 25% and blends with darker rear glass. A 20% front is likely to meter illegal.

Best tint film for a Tesla Model 3 in Houston
On a Model 3, the film you choose matters more than on most cars because of how much glass there is. We use ceramic film only. For the most heat rejection, choose 3M™ Crystalline or HITEK Ceramic Ultra, especially on the large rear glass. 3M™ Ceramic IR and HITEK Ceramic IR balance performance and price. Compare them in best ceramic tint brands or ceramic vs carbon tint.
| Film | Construction | Shades | Manufacturer heat spec |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3M™ Crystalline Series | Multilayer optical film, 200+ layers, non-metal | 20–90% | Up to 60% TSER · up to 97% IR rejection |
| 3M™ Ceramic IR Series | Ceramic, non-metal | Light to dark | Ceramic infrared rejection; 3M ownership warranty against fading to purple |
| HITEK Ceramic Ultra | Nano-ceramic, non-metal | 5 · 20 · 35 · 50 · 70% | 96% IR (1025 nm) · up to 71% TSER |
| HITEK Ceramic Black | Dyed base with nano-ceramic | 5–35% | 85% IR |
| HITEK Ceramic IR | Nano-ceramic | 5–70% | 75% IR |
Specs are the manufacturers’ published figures. 3M states performance on ¼-inch, 73% VLT automotive glass. Brands measure IR rejection over different wavelength ranges, so compare TSER (total solar energy rejected) when you want an apples-to-apples heat number. These five lines are what we stock as an authorized 3M™ and HITEK dealer.
Model 3 vs Model 3 Highland
The refreshed Model 3 Highland (2024 and later) keeps the same basic layout: frameless doors, fixed quarter windows, a glass roof and the large one-piece rear glass. Its acoustic laminated side glass takes film just like any other glass. Patterns differ slightly between the generations, so we cut film for your exact model year.
Have a Model Y instead? Its rear hatch glass is smaller and steeper; see Tesla window tint for every model, including Model Y, S, X and Cybertruck.

Frequently asked questions
Can you tint the Tesla Model 3 rear glass in one piece?
Yes. We tint the entire Model 3 rear glass with a single sheet of film, heat-shrunk on the outside of the glass to its compound curve, then installed on the inside. There is no seam, and the film covers the whole pane, including the section above the rear seats.
Why do some shops do the Model 3 rear window in two pieces?
The Model 3 rear glass is very large and deeply curved, and shrinking one sheet of film to fit it takes skill and time. Splitting it into two pieces, or tinting only the clear bottom half, is easier. The trade-off is a visible seam or film edge and less heat rejection.
Is it worth tinting the whole Model 3 rear glass or just the bottom?
For the best heat rejection and looks, tint the whole rear glass in one piece. The factory-tinted upper section still lets a lot of infrared heat through, and ceramic film over it keeps rear passengers cooler. Tinting only the clear bottom half costs less and still adds privacy, UV protection and some heat rejection.
Does the Tesla Model 3 come with tinted windows?
Only partly. The glass roof and the upper section of the rear glass have a dark factory tint and coatings. The side windows and the lower section of the rear glass are close to clear, which is why most Model 3 owners add film.
What tint percentage is legal on a Model 3 in Texas?
Front side windows must meter at least 25% with film and glass together, so most owners choose 30% or 35% film. Rear side windows and the rear glass can be any darkness because the Model 3 has outside mirrors on both sides. Windshield film is limited to above the AS-1 line or the top 5 inches.
How much does it cost to tint a Tesla Model 3 in Houston?
It depends on the film and on whether the rear glass is done in one piece or only the bottom half. Car tint at Texas Tinted starts at $249; the instant quote shows the exact price for a Model 3 with each film.
How long does it take to tint a Model 3?
About 2 to 3 hours for the side windows and the one-piece rear glass. Adding the glass roof or windshield film adds time.
Will tint affect my Model 3 phone key, LTE or GPS?
No. We only use non-metal ceramic film on Teslas, so the phone key, Bluetooth, LTE, GPS and over-the-air updates work exactly as before.
Should I tint the Model 3 glass roof?
Many Houston owners do. A light ceramic film on the front roof glass adds infrared rejection without making the roof look dark from inside, so you keep the view and lose much of the overhead heat.
Do you tint the Model 3 Highland?
Yes. We tint the 2024 and later Model 3 Highland, including the one-piece rear glass, with patterns cut for its exact glass.
When can I roll down my Model 3 windows after tint?
Keep the windows up for 3 to 5 days in warm Houston weather so the film can set, then use them normally. See how long tint takes to cure.
