Quick answer
Texas Tinted tints the Tesla Model Y, including the 2025 and later new Model Y and the six-seat Model Y L, with non-metal ceramic film from 3M™ and HITEK. We tint the side windows and the large rear hatch glass, heat-shrinking the rear glass as one piece, and add windshield heat film if you want it. The glass roof usually doesn’t need tint: Tesla’s roof glass already blocks most UV and infrared heat from the factory. If you still want it done, we tint it with the techniques a roof this size needs, with no gaps at the headliner. Front doors go to a legal Texas shade (30–35% film).
Model Y tint: what actually needs film
The Model Y’s side windows and rear hatch glass come close to clear, and that is where Houston sun gets in. Ceramic film on those windows makes the biggest difference to cabin heat, glare and privacy, and it is what almost every Model Y owner should start with.
The glass roof is different. It is one of the largest pieces of glass on any SUV, but Tesla builds it with coatings that already block most UV and infrared. We will gladly tint it, and we do it well, but we will also tell you when it isn’t worth the money.

Does the Model Y glass roof need tint?
For most owners, no. Tesla’s glass roof leaves the factory with coatings that block most UV and much of the infrared heat, which is why the cabin doesn’t feel like a greenhouse even in Houston. Film on the side windows and rear hatch, where the glass is close to clear, does far more for comfort per dollar.
Some owners still want the roof done: for a darker look from inside, for extra heat rejection over the back seat, or for kids who ride in the sun. We can do that, using a light ceramic or multilayer film so you keep the view.
Why the roof takes special technique
The Model Y roof is a single large, curved panel, and the headliner trim sits tight against the glass around its edges. The film has to be shaped to the curve and then worked under and along that headliner edge. Less experienced installers stop short of it, which leaves a visible gap of untinted glass, or force the film against it, which leaves lifting edges. We finish the roof film cleanly to the headliner, with no gaps.
The rear hatch glass, in one piece
The Model Y’s rear hatch glass is large and deeply curved. A flat sheet of film only fits it after careful heat-shrinking on the outside of the glass. We shrink and install it as one piece, so there is no seam across your rear view and no “fingers” or lines in the film.
- Rear hatch glass heat-shrunk and installed in one piece
- Frameless door glass: film filed and finished right to the top edge
- Defroster lines on the hatch glass protected
- Windshield film kept clear of the camera housing
- Non-metal ceramic only, so phone key, LTE and GPS work normally
- Door panels and speakers covered during the install
New Model Y (2025+) and Model Y L
The refreshed Model Y, often called Juniper, changed the glass shapes enough that computer-cut patterns weren’t ready when the first cars arrived. Our installers hand-cut film for those cars piece by piece, and we keep doing that whenever a new model or variant arrives before its patterns do. We also tint the six-seat Model Y L.
Many new Model Y owners bring the car to us straight from delivery.
What Model Y owners say
Since the model is so new, template programs weren’t available yet, but George went above and beyond. He took his time hand-cutting every piece of film with precision and extreme attention to detail. The craftsmanship is top-notch: no bubbles, perfect edges, and a seamless finish that completely elevates the look of the car.
I used them to tint all windows and windshields on both my Tesla Model Y and Model YL. The work is very professional… Their pricing is tiered but upfront, and they explain in detail what they do and don’t pressure you into unnecessary upsells.

Texas Transportation Code §547.613. More detail in Texas tint laws. Summary, not legal advice.
Full-windshield film falls outside the Texas exemption even when it is nearly clear, though the statute provides a defense when a driver or passenger needs sun protection for a medical reason. See windshield heat film.
Model Y vs Model 3
The Model Y and Model 3 share a lot, but the glass is different where it counts. The Model Y has a separate rear hatch glass and a roof panel, while the Model 3’s rear glass runs from the roof to the trunk as one huge pane. Driving a Model 3? See Tesla Model 3 window tint. Best tint film for a Tesla Model Y in Houston
We use ceramic film only. For the most heat rejection, choose 3M™ Crystalline or HITEK Ceramic Ultra. 3M™ Ceramic IR and HITEK Ceramic IR balance performance and price. Compare them in best ceramic tint brands or ceramic vs carbon tint.
| Film | Construction | Shades | Manufacturer heat spec |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3M™ Crystalline Series | Multilayer optical film, 200+ layers, non-metal | 20–90% | Up to 60% TSER · up to 97% IR rejection |
| 3M™ Ceramic IR Series | Ceramic, non-metal | Light to dark | Ceramic infrared rejection; 3M ownership warranty against fading to purple |
| HITEK Ceramic Ultra | Nano-ceramic, non-metal | 5 · 20 · 35 · 50 · 70% | 96% IR (1025 nm) · up to 71% TSER |
| HITEK Ceramic Black | Dyed base with nano-ceramic | 5–35% | 85% IR |
| HITEK Ceramic IR | Nano-ceramic | 5–70% | 75% IR |
Specs are the manufacturers’ published figures. 3M states performance on ¼-inch, 73% VLT automotive glass. Brands measure IR rejection over different wavelength ranges, so compare TSER (total solar energy rejected) when you want an apples-to-apples heat number. These five lines are what we stock as an authorized 3M™ and HITEK dealer.

Frequently asked questions
Should I tint my Tesla Model Y glass roof?
Usually not. Tesla’s roof glass already blocks most UV and infrared heat from the factory, so tinting the side windows and rear hatch does far more for comfort. If you want a darker look or extra heat rejection overhead, we can tint it with a light ceramic film.
Does the Model Y glass roof block UV and heat?
Yes. Tesla builds the roof glass with coatings that block most UV and much of the infrared heat. That is why the roof is the one piece of glass most Model Y owners can skip.
Why is the Model Y roof hard to tint?
It is a single large, curved panel, and the headliner sits tight against the glass at the edges. The film has to be shaped to the curve and finished along the headliner. Less experienced installers leave gaps of untinted glass or lifting edges there.
Do you tint the Model Y rear window in one piece?
Yes. The rear hatch glass is heat-shrunk on the outside and installed as one piece, with no seam across your rear view.
Can you tint the new 2025 Model Y?
Yes. We tint the 2025 and later new Model Y, including cars straight from delivery. When the new model first arrived before computer-cut patterns were available, our installers hand-cut the film piece by piece.
Do you tint the Model Y L?
Yes. We tint the six-seat Model Y L, including all side windows, the rear glass and the windshield.
What tint percentage is legal on a Model Y in Texas?
Front side windows must meter at least 25% with film and glass together, so most owners choose 30% or 35% film. Rear side windows and the rear hatch glass can be any darkness because the Model Y has outside mirrors on both sides.
How long does it take to tint a Model Y?
About 2 to 3 hours for the side windows and rear hatch glass. Adding the windshield or glass roof adds time.
How much does it cost to tint a Tesla Model Y in Houston?
It depends on the film and the glass you include. Car tint at Texas Tinted starts at $249; the instant quote shows the exact price for a Model Y with each film.
Will tint affect my Model Y phone key or LTE?
No. We only use non-metal ceramic film on Teslas, so the phone key, Bluetooth, LTE, GPS and over-the-air updates work exactly as before.
Can I tint the Model Y windshield?
Yes, with a nearly clear ceramic heat film or a legal visor strip, cut around the camera housing. Texas exempts windshield film only above the AS-1 line or in the top 5 inches; see our windshield heat film page for the details.
